Supporting the Hurley

Community support makes the Hurley’s success possible. All funds raised by NPHS go directly to the school, providing enrichment programs, facilities upgrades, and academic support. Learn more about how your donations ensure the students are achieving at their highest possible levels, and how you can help:

Auction

A donation of goods, services, or a gift certificate to our silent auction will create visibility for your business at the event while enhancing the value of the auction, which is the bread and butter of the event. If you have questions about a donation of goods or services, contact Auction Co-Coordinator Anne Bruntrager.

Why Give

The Joseph J. Hurley K–8 School serves a diverse population of native Spanish- and native English-speaking children, 73% of whom come from low-income families. Money donated to NPHS has helped the Hurley:

  • Create a combined, flexible “gym-ateria” to move lunch to a central location;
  • transform a cracked asphalt parking lot into an athletic field;
  • fund a Director of Enrichment, librarian, science specialist, and literacy coaches;
  • increase in-school arts and science programming; and
  • create Bodega de Arte, the Hurley’s after school extended learning program.

As a result, 48% of the two-way bilingual third grade classes tested into Boston Public Schools advanced work program, and the middle school test scores were all above 80%. This is proof that the challenging two-way language immersion curriculum and enrichment programming is creating genuine change in the lives of the diverse population of inner-city students at Hurley.

There’s no doubt the Hurley has come a long way thanks to your donations and the direction of our principal. But as the budgets are cut, the responsibility falls to private donations to not only continue funding progress, but to prevent the loss of all the gains we’ve achieved. The percentage of students who have moved up to “proficient” in English Language Arts has increased 5-fold, in Math 10-fold. But still almost half the students at the Hurley are at risk of falling behind — and 73% do not have the financial means to get help on their own. The Hurley is committed to increasing the academic proficiency of those students but to do that takes extra time, resources, and programming. Your support ensures these children can continue to rise.
